Julius Akpong had his first degree in Applied Chemistry from the University of Calabar and Masters in Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies from the Philippines. His wealth of experience has spanned over the past fifteen years across Pharmaceuticals, Oil and Gas, power generation, Construction and Aviation safety. He has been an executive committee member and a resource person for the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Lagos branch; providing facilitations at HSE trainings to different corporate customers and students, while consulting for multinational clients and researching into global safety concerns. In this regard, Julius has trained over 3000 safety Professionals and set up public safety advocacy campaign squads.

At the Globeleq Power Solutions Nigeria Ltd where he currently works, Julius ensures the development and implementation of world class HSE policies in sales, installation, operation/maintenance and aftermarket services of Cummins lean burn gas generator sets in Independent Power Plants across Nigeria in particular and the development and implementation of policies towards the attainment of a positive safety culture across the power plants. He has also been project leader for some key humanitarian projects during his previous Organizations Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, as well as controlling risks in other projects where he was not a leader. This has led to the attainment of over 1million man hours accident-free. He is a Fellow of the Emergency Crisis and Risk Management Institute (ECRMI), Member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), a Graduate Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), United Kingdom, a member of the International Association of Safety Professionals (IASP), USA, a Fellow of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), member of the Chemical society of Nigeria and a trained fire fighter (Niger and Lagos States Fire Service). He is co-founder of the Health and Safety Practitioners Association (HASPA), an NGO formed by Nigerian HSE practitioners in the diaspora. He has attended many courses and conferences on Occupational Health and Safety and is a resourceful and passionate safety, sustainability and Business Continuity professional with indepth imaginative prowess on the workings of nature and chemistry. Julius is a certified International tutor with the Disaster Recovery Institute, USA.

ALEX KAKUUKU, is a co-founder and Managing partner at Geotropic Consults, an Environmental and Social Safeguards Practice in Uganda. He is a certified Environmental Practitioner by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), a member Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum (UCMP), member OSHAfrica and a Health and Safety Manager at ATC Uganda, a leading wireless telecommunications infrastructure provider globally.  Alex has over 13 years’ experience in occupational health and safety management, spanning the manufacturing and telecommunications industries. He has participated in several environmental audits for infrastructure projects mainly the hydropower/electricity sector in Uganda, as lead OSH specialist.

Alex has a bachelor in Environmental Science degree from Makerere university, a NEBOSH International General Certificate from Rapid Results College and ISO Lead Auditor training for the Quality Management Systems from SGS Kenya.  He is currently pursuing his MSc degree in Environmental Health and Safety Management from the Uganda Christian University and the Oakseed Executive leadership course at the Institute for National Transformation (INT Uganda).

Sir (Dr.) Gogomary Oyet, is currently the Group Head External Relations Communications/EHSQ at OVH Energy Marketing Limited. Prior to the Divestment of Oando Downstream in 2016, Dr. Oyet was the Group Head and General Manager of Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality. He provides guidance on all ERC & EHSQ strategy, brand management and its execution for OVH Energy Marketing Limited. Dr Hameed is a lawyer by training. Her interest in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) began as far back as 2004 when she researched the legislating of corporate manslaughter in the United Kingdom. This initial interest latter stemmed into an urge to further understand the subject when she again took up the research on the role of Nigerian courts in addressing challenges posed to workers as regards Occupational Safety and Health at work.

Dr R.D. He is an editorial board member and reviewer for several academic journals in his discipline. He has published several articles in peer reviewed and non – refereed journals and has been an active presenter in several international, regional and local conferences in the field of public health, environmental and occupational health and environmental quality management.

Dr. Uraih Obiageli Nuala has a bachelor’s degree in medicine from Igbenedion university Okada in Nigeria, a master’s degree in International Public Health from the University of York, UK., a doctorate at the University of Bath, UK (ongoing), postgraduate certification at Harvard school of public health on Human resources for health and NEBOSH Certification in Health and Safety. She is a public health physician with over eight years of experience in clinical practice in infectious diseases and conducting health system strengthening programs in the Nigerian health sector. Currently, she works in the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), as a Chief Medical Officer.  She has also consulted for international NGOs, i.e. FHI360, IHVN and the World Health Organization. She is passionate about the implementation of occupational health and safety in the African healthcare system.

Odigie Akhator Joel is an activist and trade unionist with over 2 decades of organising experience. He is a Nigerian and the Deputy General Secretary of the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa –an organisation currently representing over 18 million workers in 51 of the 54 African countries: www.ituc-africa.org )

Comrade Odigie has a Master degree in Labour and Globalisation from the Berlin School of Economics and Law.

In his words, “I see myself as a Pan-Africanist and a Humanist seeking to contribute my quota to answers on issues of Africa and the world’s development deficits- general injustices, as well as working with others to achieve a world where social justice is real, attained and shared”. He additionally holds a post-graduate Diploma and a Masters Degree in Occupational Health & Safety from the University of Turin, Italy and is SAMTRAC (South Africa) qualified. Obajinmi is the Nigerian Coordinator/ Africa Region Representative of Moses Lake Medical Team USA, a not-for-profit health/social organization that has given free medical treatment, including Plastic and general Surgeries to over 70,000 Nigerians across 3 geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Through the platform, many lives have been saved. John is the founder and CEO of Fix Africa Development Foundation, an international NGO that is empowering people across Africa in education, safety and climate change initiatives.

Summary

Ursula Schies studied agriculture and received her PhD in applied botany in 1991. From 1990 to 1993 she worked as a project engineer and project leader for contaminated site remediation in Germany.

In 1993, she moved to the responsible body for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the construction industry (BG BAU). During this time, she established the new field of microbiological hazards in various areas of construction, such as remediation of contaminated sites, landfills, wastewater treatment and buildings contaminated with pigeon droppings and mould.

During this time, she chaired several working groups and advised other insurers and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Since 2011, she has been deputy head of Prevention forum+, two international internet platforms for occupational health and safety, on behalf of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).
